Kirschen Firmer Gouge – 30mm – ferrule on the hornbeam handle, to endure pounding with a mallet – will also work equally well for the more gentle use with paring. The 30mm size refers to the distance between the points on the top of the arc of the curve at the cutting edge. Great for hardwood spoons where you need the extra grunt over a hook knife. They come nicely ground – and we hone them so they are ready to use as soon as you get them.

Description
These Firmer Gouges made by Kirschen of Germany are tough and nicely made. With the ferrule on the hornbeam handle, they will endure years of pounding with a mallet – but will also work equally well for the more gentle use with paring.
Ideal for spoon carving, and great for those hardwood spoons where you need the extra grunt sometimes over a hook knife.
This gouge has been Greg’s favourite gouge for demonstrating hardwood spoon carving for a couple of years now.
They come nicely ground – and we hone them so they are ready to use as soon as you get them!
The 30mm size refers to the distance between the points on the top of the arc of the curve at the cutting edge. These will do a large spoon bowl more easily than the 20mm sibling.
